What is thespatialindex.com?
thespatialindex.com is an open platform that features apps, data, media, code and services that extend the capabilities of GIS.
Why did you build the site?
Ope Ltd was a long time provider on the ArcGIS Marketplace (which is shutting down in 2026).
The ArcGIS Marketplace has/had many issues including;
- Barriers to entry.
- Favoristism.
- Restrictive practises.
- Inconsistent rules.
- Bad design.
- Failure to act on feedback.
thespatialindex.com is meant to address the issues with the ArcGIS Marketplace.
Is it perfect? No, probably not. However, we are happy to listen to feedback.
Whats the goal the site?
The primary goal of the site is to allow anyone to list products and services that benefit the GIS community.
How much does it cost?
Nothing, its free.
Why is it free?
Community is more important than a cover charge.
Surely I can just post on the Esri Community to promote myself?
Esri do not allow "promotion" of any products or services on the Community forums.
Like the Marketplace, rules are inconsistently applied.
Personally, Ive had posts deleted that were relevant to the discussion (not promotion) while others doing blatant promotion get a free pass.
Can anyone participate?
Yes. Some parts of the site do require you to login though.
For example, if you want to leave a review you need to login. This is to reduce spam/fake reviews.
How does the login work?
Logging in requires an ArcGIS Online account.
The account can be any valid account. This includes social accounts (Google, GitHub, Apple etc) - social accounts are free.
Why do I need an ArcGIS Online account?
We dont want to maintain or secure your login details. ArcGIS Online accounts are secure and if you dont have one its free to create one.
Are you affiliated or aligned to Esri?
Ope Ltd is an Esri business partner. We do Esri stuff but we love open source software and initiatives.
